What Is a Porch?
A porch is a raised structure made of concrete or wood, typically located along the front of the home. They can be covered or uncovered and have stairs that lead from the porch to ground level. Porches can also be located on the sides or back of the home and connect to an entry point on the first level of the home. Porches help add to the curb appeal of your home and also create space for plants and casual seating.

What Is a Patio?
A patio is a ground-level space, usually created with a concrete slab or with a foundational layer of concrete or gravel and outdoor tiles or paving stones on top. They provide a dry, grass-free space for outdoor dining, lounging, or placing fire pits. Patios are typically located in the backyard of a home and connect to the back door. However, patios can also go anywhere in the yard! Just as long as there is a pathway to connect it to the main patio or back door of the home.

So, what's the difference between a porch and a patio? Keep reading to compare each option and determine the best one for your outdoor space.
Important Note: Make sure your plans for a porch or patio align with local building codes and your HOA's standards before you consider adding one to your home's exterior. This is important even when completing a backyard project that can't be seen from the street.
Cost for Completion
Cost is the main factor to consider when deciding on a patio vs. a porch. Generally, patios are much more budget-friendly than porches because they take less time to build and require less maintenance compared to porches. Depending on the scope of the project, patios can require up to $1,000 to build, while porches require $5,000 or more due to the added construction costs and materials.
Time Requirements
Porches: The amount of time it will take to build a porch depends on the size, building materials, and whether or not the porch will include a roof and support beams. Expect the project to take a few months as you and/or the contractor will need time to draw up blueprints, get materials together, and complete the project.
Patios: Patios typically take less time to build compared to porches because you're building at the ground level and laying concrete and/or stones. The larger the patio, the longer the time frame for construction. The materials you use can also impact the amount of time it takes to construct the patio. If you plan to use pavers, all you need to do is clear the area of grass or debris, add a layer of gravel or sand, and then arrange the paving stones on top. This could take a day or more depending on the size of the patio. For concrete slabs or bricks/outdoor tiles laid in concrete, you'll need at least a day or more for the concrete to dry completely before you can place furniture on top.

Skill Level
Porches: Because porches are raised – and in some cases – roofed structures, we highly recommend enlisting a professional contractor to help you complete the project. They will oversee the project, sourcing materials and ensuring that your porch is safe and up to code.
Patios: Patios are more beginner-friendly because you don't have to build anything – but it will still show off your DIY skills! You'll likely need some knowledge on laying concrete, but you can mostly do this project on your own! If you are just using pavers, you can play around with the arrangement of the stones however you like. If using concrete as a base for tiles or bricks, we recommend doing a practice arrangement before you lay the concrete. This is because once tiles are laid on wet concrete, there is a small window of time before the concrete dries.

Porches: When located in the front yard, porches add curb appeal to your home in addition to casual lounge space. Regardless of placement, porches usually have enough room for a porch swing or chairs and decorative planters. Whether you enjoy watching the goings-on of your neighborhood or just want a cozy spot to lounge the day away, porches are filled with potential!
Patios: Patios are the go-to spot for outdoor lounging and alfresco dining – even better if you border the patio with flowers or Tuscan-inspired boxwood shrubs. However, patios are also perfect for fire pits and grilling activities because they're located at ground level (no need to worry about the weight of a grill like you would on a deck or porch) and are typically a safe distance from the house (no worries about open flames coming in contact with overhead roofs or siding).
Placement
As for the location of porch vs. patio areas, porches can go in the front, on the side, or along the back of the home – anywhere there's an exterior door. In contrast, patios are more common in backyards or side yards as the front yard ground level is usually devoted to walkways and driveways.
Privacy Level
Patios and porches can both offer privacy depending on placement and design features. Patios offer a bit more privacy because they're located in the backyard, but you can easily add privacy to a front porch by making it screened-in or by adding curtains. If your porch or patio doesn't have a lot of privacy, you can always add privacy screens!

Decks are raised structures situated right up against the house, typically made of wood planks (like some porches). They may have safety railings depending on the height of the deck. Like patios, they are usually located in the backyard and connect to the back door of the home. They may or may not have stairs leading from the deck to the ground level of the backyard. Decks can have roofs, but they are much more likely to be open. Some decks are multi-level unlike porches or patios.
Balconies are raised structures that are smaller than porches, patios, and decks. They are typically attached to apartments or private rooms in homes. There's usually enough space for a bistro set or a quaint container garden. Balconies can have roofs but are usually open. Like porches and decks, balconies have safety railings. However they are usually located on the second level or higher and do not have stairs down to the ground level.
