Kids Beds
Kids beds come in a variety of sizes to fit your growing child. You can choose from toddler, twin, twin XL, full, and queen beds depending on your child’s age and the space available. It’s important to compare the bed dimensions to the size of your child’s room before purchasing. As a general rule of thumb, your child’s bed shouldn’t take up more than 30% – 40% of the floor space in their room for a balanced layout.
A child’s bed size is also dependent on their age, size, and sleeping habits. Ideally, the bed should be 6" – 8" longer than your child’s height to allow them to comfortably stretch out. If your child is a restless sleeper, you may want to opt for a wider bed to give them room to move around. Remember, bigger isn’t always better when it comes to bed size. Some children, especially younger ones, might feel more secure in small beds with enclosed frames, canopies, or low clearance.

Kids Bedroom Sets
Kids bedroom sets are available in various configurations to suit your storage needs. Bedroom furniture sets include a bed at a minimum with either a nightstand, dresser, desk, armoire, or any combination of them. Depending on the size of your child’s bedroom, you may be limited in the bedroom set you can choose. It’s important to factor in the dimensions of each individual furniture piece in relation to the room size, making sure to account for door clearance, window placement, and walking space. Keep at least 24" of space in front of a dresser, desk, nightstand or armoire to allow all drawers to open with ease.

Kids Nightstands
Finding the right size nightstand for your child means considering your storage needs, the height of the bed, and the space available in the room. In terms of height, you want the nightstand to be level with or within 4" of the height of the mattress for easy bedside access. Depending on the height on your child’s bed, choose between short (under 23"), standard (23" – 28"), or tall (over 28") nightstands.
Kids nightstands also come in different widths to offer more storage or fit the layout of your child’s bedroom. You’ll want to position the nightstand between 3" – 6" from the edge of your child’s bed so they can easily reach it. With this measurement in mind, choose between a narrow (under 21"), standard (21" – 27"), or wide (over 27") nightstand depending on the space available next to the bed.

Kids Dressers & Chests
Dressers and chests allow for convenient clothing storage in your kid’s room, but their dimensions depend on the type of storage you prefer. Dressers have a horizontal layout and are generally lower to the ground, allowing your children to easily access the drawers and dress themselves independently. For a standard kids dresser, expect something around 42" – 60" wide, 16" – 20" deep, and 30" – 36" tall. On the other hand, chests are a taller, vertical set of drawers that may fit a narrower space but are more difficult to access for young children. Their standard dimensions are typically around 30" – 38" wide, 16" – 20" deep, and 44" – 54" tall.
When deciding on what size dresser or chest is best for your child’s bedroom, you’ll want to factor in how much storage you need in addition to the space available in the room. Dressers and chests come in a wide range of sizes and configurations from simple two-drawer designs to larger pieces with eight or more drawers for ample storage. As a general rule of thumb, your child’s dresser should be able to hold two or three weeks worth of clothing.
Tip!
Dressers are a great way to add storage to a kids room, but you’ll need to measure for the right fit. Read Dresser Dimensions: How to Choose the Right One to help you get started.
Kids Armoires
Incorporating an armoire into your child’s bedroom can be a helpful storage solution if the room lacks closet space for hanging garments. Children’s armoires are smaller than standard wardrobes and are designed to fit children’s hangers that are between 12" – 14" wide. They are also shorter – usually between 40" – 55" tall – to be easily accessible to children and promote independence. If you opt for an adult-sized wardrobe to accommodate the growth of your child and their clothes, be sure to anchor it to the wall as armoires are top-heavy and can pose safety risks if not properly anchored.
Tip!
Children’s armoires are typically smaller than standard armoires, but the sizing considerations remain the same. Read How to Measure an Armoire for a Fabulous Fit to understand the basic dimensions and how an armoire will fit in your kids bedroom.
Kids Headboards
If you want to start with a simple upgrade to your kid’s room, consider adding a decorative headboard. Kids headboards are suitable for twin, twin XL, and full beds, so be sure to choose one that is compatible with the size of your child’s existing mattress and bed frame. While panel and upholstered headboards are only a few inches thick, bookcase headboards are usually between 8" – 12" deep due to their built-in shelving and storage. Be sure to add this depth to the overall measurement of your kids bed to ensure it will fit in the room.
