The beautiful carnation surrounded by leaves featured on this mat is inspired by an Arts and Crafts wallpaper held in the archives. Compton was designed in 1895–6 for Compton Hall in Wolverhampton, England, the home of Laurence Hodson, and it was probably the result of a joint effort between William Morris (1834–96) and his assistant J.H. I purchased this V A Dianthus coir doormat to replace a V A Strawberry Thief coir doormat which I purchased 2 years ago. The original doormat was beautiful on my covered front stoop, but it had become somewhat worn and the colors faded (as shown in 1 of the 3 attached pictures). The new Dianthus doormat is beautiful and matches the online images and description. The black background looks terrific in front of my black door and the terra cotta hues really pick up the similar colors in my brick steps and foundation.
