Proserpine (similar to the Greek Persephone) was carried off to the underworld by Pluto (Hades), where she ate six pomegranate seeds, resulting in her having to live in the underworld six months out of the year. Rossetti reflected this dichotomy in the composition with the use of light and shadows, and the river Styx is evoked by the swirls of the rich blue velvet gown.
