The back plate is plastic and it is smaller than I was expecting but it is every bit as adorable as I was hoping for.

I love this as it was the size, color, and style I was looking for. The back is plastic, but the front is not. I can't comment on the battery operation, as I probably won't put batteries in it. I wanted it for decor only!
