This little burner has enough power to boil a SMALL pot of water, though it definitely takes longer than a stovetop. We tried to boil just under half of a 3 quart pot of water to make some ramen and the burner kept turning itself off before we could get a boil. There must be an over-heat safety switch built in, so if you use too much water in a medium-large pot, it will never get hot enough. This makes me think it's not a great choice for dorm rooms because I made a lot of ramen in college and this burner won't boil the water for it. Also, if something boils over in your small pit, it goes down into the heating element area that you cannot see or get to without a screwdriver. They did try to make the metal raised so it wouldn't immediately go towards the element, but it could still be a safety issue.

Perfect for a single young guy with no stove! It does what it's supposed to do.

This small burner heated up quickly and worked great for camping running off my small Honda generator. the logical use would be for an extra burner during the Holidays but I just use it for camping.

I bought this 1100 watt electric burner to use for melting lead ....and it works great ..the temperature seems to be consistent and that's what is needed for my purpose ;...I would recommend this burner to anyone.
