The underside of the chairs is uncovered. The material is stapled all around. Although not visible unless chair is turned upside down, it looks very unfinished.

I love these chairs but, takes some time and patience to put together. While they look great, they are very light in weight so not a high quality sturdy dining chair; but, they are fine for our home! I was also missing one screw which I had to go get from a local hardware store.
