So I have a lot to say about these shelves. I was looking for some substantial storage solution as I recently moved into a 2600sq ft home and am furnishing from scratch. Needing so many things, I can't really splurge on much, and in looking for a wall unit like this one, I found it was difficult to find something midrange. Either it was super cheap particle board garbage furniture, or insanely expensive all hardwood lifetime type furniture. I thought at this price point of something like $1700, it was something of reasonable quality in that midrange category. So, while I didn't really love the look of it, I went ahead and bought it for the sake of having something decent that wasn't crazy expensive. Quality: this is all manufactured wood, but it's not cheap or flimsy at all. Each piece is heavy/solid. The kind of material you'd expect at this price point. I can put some substantial weight on all of these shelves without issue. Additionally, the veneer is of excellent quality. I just put it together but it seems very durable. It does have some kind of satin or glossy sheen to it though that I don't care for, but overall the quality of materials is excellent--5 Stars for my expectations. Assembly: Lengthy, barely doable. This is one point where I take a star away. It is honestly just silly for any furniture assembly instructions to be confusing in any way. I could have EASILY written perfectly clear instructions for this assembly that anyone could follow without issue, but sadly that is not what you receive when you get this item. There were actually 3 instances I noted in the instructions that the parts were outright mislabeled with the wrong number. The drawer slides provided were (I think) different than the drawer slides pictured in the directions leaving you to figure out which hole in the slide to use when affixing to the pieces. There was also no explanation about how the drawer slides worked at all, that you needed to separate them, which end you put where, what direction they need to slide, etc. It was just so pointlessly confusing. Then there were certain back boards that were completely symmetric with the exception of a small hole drilled in the corner. Yet the directions did not show that hole forcing you to figure out the orientation yourself. Without even explaining what these holes were for (which turned out to be the holes through which you ultimately thread the wiring for the LED lights). If you put them in the wrong orientation, you would have to tear the whole thing apart to change it. The hardware for the sliding faux stone piece was to be attached with 4 screws, yet there were only 2 screw holes on the piece forcing you to make 2 more holes. Then the cabinet door on the lower right side had the same issue; required 4 screws to attach each hinge but only 2 holes were provided, which then made you wonder are those for the back or the front row of hinge holes? The function of the screw adjustments on the hinge hardware itself was not explained which is essential to understand in order to make the door align properly. The installation and function of the push/extend piece was also poorly illustrated/explained and you have to figure out that the end can be unthreaded/moved forward to make it work. There was literally no direction on installing the lights AT ALL other than showing a drawing of a single clip. Basically, the directions were so bad that it was almost funny. And it makes you wonder if this is done on purpose to frustrate people to the degree that they give up and end up having to pay for someone to assemble it. There is honestly no excuse for such bad directions...there was nothing all that complicated about it, but it was made complicated because of a failure to adequately explain anything. Stability: I'm taking the second star for this. While I do feel the final product is nice and sturdy, about half of the cam screw/lock combinations would engage, but wouldn't actually lock. You can tell when it locks because you hear an audible click or two, then if you tried to loosen it, you'd feel some resistance (because of the lock), but probably 50% of them wouldn't lock, and I KNOW how to marry a cam screw and lock, which leads me to believe this is just a bad hardware issue. So all things considered, Id say this is good piece of furniture. Sturdy and solid, but probably a nightmare for some people to assemble because of the terrible/incomplete directions, and some potential hardware issues. Otherwise I think I'm pretty pleased with it. In the end I don't love it, but I don't hate it either.
