This bookcase works great in my daughter’s room! We wanted something that could grow with her and have a bit of hidden storage, so this was perfect. We hired installation, and it was quick and well done.

For around $250+, the finish and looks is good considering its plywood and MDF, but the strength and long-term durability are lacking a bit. I certainly expected plywood and MDF for this price point, but the lack of any significant structural and/or lateral load bearing pieces makes me concerned about long-term use. To be clear, its not the fact its made of plywood and MDF, but rather how the load-bearing pieces are laid out and the lack of such pieces in certain areas. The open shelving and the cabinet-door areas are basically two rectangular boxes connected together. They share a common piece - the bottom open shelf, i.e. the bottom open shelf is the top of the cabinet underneath. The lateral strength is provided by the ~1/8th-inch thick MDF panels that are nailed at the back perimeter into the ~0.75-inch thick boards around the top, sides, and bottoms. Though, there are two of them: one behind the open shelves, and the other for the door area. This accounts for 90%+ of lateral strength, and the instructions even go so far as to say that you must not lift the bookcase upright without fully installing these panels. The adjustable shelves do help after they are installed at the end, but they don't do much since they aren't fastened to the structure, nor would you want to as you'd lose the ability to move them. Without those MDF panels, there is nothing preventing the bookcase from toppling sideways aside from some help from the adjustable shelves. I would have preferred something that would have stronger lateral load-bearing strength. Luckily, this isn't something that will move often, but over time with consistent opening/closing of the doors, bumping into it, putting things on/off the shelves, I think nails would come loose and/or the thin MDF panels would wear and fail around the nails, losing lateral strength. Let's put it this way: this wouldn't survive a move. To get better long-term use and peace-of-mind, you'll want to add 4 corner plates (top and bottom) and 2 T-plates (middle), which I plan on doing.
