Black bamboo has culms that are green when they first emerge from the ground, and within months they acquire the natural black colour with dark-brown patches that give this bamboo a beautiful, rich, appearance. The culms of this bamboo are used extensively in Japanese woodworking and are excellent for indoor and outdoor decoration. Our Timor black timber bamboo poles come in an average of 2-3 inches in diameter. They are made up of a thick wall of heavy bamboo and are crack-resistant. Colour and actual diameter will vary due to the natural material. We cannot guarantee a specific diameter of each pole, only that they will be between the diameter of 2-3 inches. Bamboo poles may also have different diameters at either end, this is due to the way bamboo grows.

Black Giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper), also known as Petung bamboo, is renowned for being the strongest and largest among bamboo species. This black variety of D. asper features large culms that transition from dark brown at the base to black after a few nodes, with a diameter reaching up to 7 inches. Its thick-walled culms make it ideal for heavy construction and foundational structures. Farmers and builders in Indonesia and Southeast Asia have long recognized the superior qualities of Asper as a building material. These giant poles lend themselves to creating majestic and durable structures. In terms of size and growth, Asper is comparable to the Latin American Guadua angustifolia. While there's a friendly rivalry over which species is stronger, the fact that many farmers are planting Asian Asper in South America and Africa, whereas few are bringing Guadua to Asia, indicates Asper's greater global appeal. Each pole will vary in exact size, colour and appearance due to the natural material. Diameter may vary within half an inch of the listed size. Bamboo grows with one end slightly smaller than the other, splits and cracks that do not go all the way through the wall are natural and not considered defects. Just ensure you allow for a bit extra when measuring since this is rolled and tightened by metal wire.
