The base and the bottom branches come together as one, and then the tall branches gets slid into those holes. I used this on my front porch and it held up perfectly all winter, even through rain, with no issues at all. It feels sturdy and well made, and the branches were easy to shape. The glow leans more warm and slightly orange rather than bright white, which I really loved because it made the space feel cozy and inviting at night.
