The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. Husband and wife tag team to put together the armoire. The first one took 2 hours, the second one took 1.5 hours and the third one took 1 hour so in total 4.5 hrs. We had EDM music playing in the background so it kept us motivated throughout the process. The directions were very easy to follow. Really not bad at all considering the size of this thing. This is not heirloom furniture by any means, but it’s sturdy enough for what I need. If I could give a 4.5, I would. I ordered the outer closet system tower for a really low price in September 2019 and it was supposed to have the drawers (was listed with them). I am embarrassed to admit, but the 2 boxes sat unopened until Christmas 2021 when my cousin visited from Cali and offered to assemble for me. That is when I realized the drawers were missing. After a lot of stalking Wayfair for the drawers (which were out of stock) and several customer service emails and calls from December 2021 through August 2022, finally got the 3 drawers here. There were some problems, but Wayfair refunded my purchase price for the tower and gave me a discount so I could buy the drawers at a reasonable price. 3 years later, I finally have this "armoire" assembled and am pleased. I did struggle with the drawer pulls initially and will give this tip in case others experience the same. Use a flat head screw driver to gently separate the piece that needs to be removed. Took me several hours to put these together as the instructions are all pics and I was being very cautious to check everything prior to assembly. Also used a phillips screw driver only, which was slow going, but I feel better using on composite wood so as to not damage the pieces. At the end of the day, these are nicely made and solid drawers with a nice weight. The aren't as perfectly aligned as I would like. After a lot of stalking Wayfair for the drawers (which were out of stock) and several customer service emails and calls from December 2021 through August 2022, finally got the 3 drawers here. There were some problems, but Wayfair refunded my purchase price for the tower and gave me a discount so I could buy the drawers at a reasonable price. 3 years later, I finally have this "armoire" assembled and am pleased. I did struggle with the drawer pulls initially and will give this tip in case others experience the same. Use a flat head screw driver to gently separate the piece that needs to be removed. Took me several hours to put these together as the instructions are all pics and I was being very cautious to check everything prior to assembly. Also used a phillips screw driver only, which was slow going, but I feel better using on composite wood so as to not damage the pieces. At the end of the day, these are nicely made and solid drawers with a nice weight. The aren't as perfectly aligned as I would like. NEVER BUY THIS!!!! Not unless you are a carpenter and can fix the errors in what is sent. The directions have no words so you need to figure everything out. Parts were missing. Predrilled holes were not aligned so I had to redrill holes. Corners were chipped (this is particle board). Hardware for doors needed to be muscled in place. I can go on and on. 4 of us were looking at directions and we needed to "use common sense" to figure it out. Wayfair does not offer professional install. If it did that would make a bit of a difference. Nor does the manufacturer. Also, the manufacturer, when called, does not have all knowledgeable people. Some were and some gave different answers. We have a humble three-bedroom house, which means every room must pull double duty, kind of like a superhero with a mortgage.
