The set is constructed of a good quality thick plastic with handles and the feeder has round caps that can be taken off in the mornings and replaced at night to keep predators from eating the food. I absolutely love this set with the exception that you have to keep raising the feeder/waterer with the growth of your chickens or they will continue to scratch and waste the food. Otherwise, I have no complaints - just wish they came with a stand. As you can tell from the pictures our chickens are starting to scratch out the food instead of just eating it indicating that it's time we raised them both again. Raising them takes care of it. One time use. Won't even make it through one batch of chicks. I love the design of this, but it's made out of pressed wood that cracks with any moisture. It's not sealed and so the urine soaks through the wood chips we put in and into the wood. And we use a lot of chips and clean the brooder frequently. The chickens make a mess with the water and so now the bottom and sides of the brooder must be held together with tape. This container presents the chickens with an easy way to get feed. I put organic laying pellets on one side and organic scratch feed on the other side. Waste is eliminated by the fact that the birds pick the feed inside the box. They like to peck through the feed while eating. Havent decided where to set this up for the girls yet. Took a while to set up with one person, but did just fine (after realizing I had to disassemble a couple pieces backwards...oops). Definitely use the protective gloves, edges are very sharp. Arrived banged up and dented, but with some determination and bending while assembling, it didnt make a noticeable difference. The protective metal tray to retrieve the eggs is odd, perhaps need hinges vs screws But I just left them a bit loose to openshut easily. Also, use a regular screwdriver. Recommend this product!.
