Ottoman Style Guide
Find a style that meets your needs and blends well with your decor.
Frequently, ottomans are thought of as mere footrests, but in truth they're actually extremely multifunctional pieces of furniture that can act as additional seating, an occasional table, or even provide storage. From small, circular storage ottomans to large, rectangular coffee table ottomans, these handy and beautiful accents are hard to pass up. We've broken down six popular styles to keep in mind when shopping for your own ottoman furniture.

1. For Something Basic, Try a Standard Ottoman
If you are in search of a more traditional ottoman, the standard style will best suit your needs. Their simple design allows this piece to serve as either a decor accent or as a footrest (usually both). Standard ottoman furniture is available in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and does not have any additional features.
Tip!
Make sure you measure the height of your sofa before you shop for an ottoman. Find an ottoman that is the exact height of your sofa seat or slightly below. Anything above the height of your sofa seat will make for an uncomfortable footrest.
2. Get a Coffee Table Ottoman for an Additional Surface
A coffee table ottoman – also known as a tray-top ottoman – is designed to be sturdy and usually stain-resistant as they are a multifunctional and space-efficient furniture piece. Most often, the top cushion of these footstools is removable and can be flipped upside down to become a tray that slots back into the ottoman itself, some require that the top cushion be removed to reveal the tray table beneath, and others have a tray that comes out completely and slots over the top of the ottoman cushion.
If you are short on space in commonly used areas like the living room, playroom, and even bedroom, a storage ottoman is a handy piece of furniture that serves as seating, a footrest, and additional storage space all in one – an impressive array of functions considering their small profile. Not only do storage ottomans feature a removable or hinged lift-up top, but some styles can include side drawers that open on each side for additional space. It's also common to see them with a tray top feature too.
A pouf ottoman functions much the same way a standard ottoman does, only they do not have any legs. They are generally made from fabric or leather, and overstuffed for a squashy but sturdy square or round/oval shape, allowing you to rest your feet on them or use them as spare seating. If you're looking for an easy way to add playful color or instant visual interest to your space, a lightweight pouf ottoman is your best bet.
The great thing about ottoman furniture is they come in so many shapes, sizes, and forms, but different aesthetics and styles, and similar functions. A tufted ottoman for example, functions just the same as a standard one, but has a stronger focus on a luxe and elegant visual design. They are often upholstered in rich velvet fabric that accentuates the diamond button finish and work especially well as a modern and upmarket decor piece that instantly elevates a room.
When it comes to small-space living, multipurpose items rule. As they are on their own, ottomans already serve a number of functions, but it is sleeper ottomans that take the prize for multifunctionality. While they might be larger than their regular counterparts, sleeper ottomans are able to pull-out and become a chaise lounge/sleeper bed. This is an ideal option, whether for yourself or guests. When the pull-out bed is not in use, the large ottoman simply slides back into itself to simply add extra seating to your room.
Ottomans serve a great number of purposes, making them the ideal furniture piece for any home.
