Shed Sizes
The right shed size should have plenty of space for the items you want to store, as well enough room to move items around, and the capacity for items you plan on buying in the future. Use the illustration above to help you determine which shed dimensions are best for you.
Small & Extra Small
Small sheds typically have 25 to 40 sq. ft. This size shed is best suited for storing yard tools or fitting smaller outdoor items, such as sports equipment, a push lawn mower, or seasonal decor. No yard? No problem! Small sheds can fit any type of outdoor space, including on patios or decks, to provide a bit of extra storage space. If you have limited space and need storage to tuck away a few yard tools or lawn games, try an extra small shed. These sheds measure below 25 sq. ft. and are easy to move around the yard.
Medium
Medium sheds have between 40 to 75 sq. ft. to fit larger items like a riding lawn mower or multiple bicycles. They're also a great size for storing patio furniture during the colder months. This size is a good fit for medium- to large-sized backyards.
Large & Extra Large
Large sheds often range from 75 to 100 sq. ft., so they work best in spacious backyards. If you're looking to store multiple outdoor items, such as lawn mowers, wheelbarrows, and leaf blowers, this size is an excellent choice. For even more space, extra large sheds have more than 100 sq. ft. and can accommodate multiple pieces of large equipment. With plenty of space, this size is also a great option if you're looking to add a workshop or recreational space to your yard. Remember to measure to make sure the shed doors are large enough for the items to pass through.
To find the right shed size, there are a few things to consider: how you want to use your shed, what you want to store, and how large your yard is. Use these questions to help you determine what shed size meets your needs best:
What Do You Plan to Use It For?
While sheds can help you optimize and organize your outdoor items, they can also act as home gyms, art studios, offices, or hangout spaces. These bonus areas will require more space than if you’re simply storing gardening supplies.
What Do You Want to Store?
If you do plan on using your shed for storage, you’ll need to think about what you plan on storing. Seasonal decor may be able to fit in a smaller shed, while bulky equipment like lawn mowers or snowblowers require more space.
How Large Is Your Yard?
In addition to shed capacity, you need to measure the size of your yard. This will help you understand how large of a shed your yard can accommodate.
Are There Local Zoning Laws?
Communities or neighborhoods may have regulations that can determine the size or placement of your shed. Some have regulations that require you to register the placement of the shed with the zoning department before installation, and some large sheds require a building permit. Be sure to check with your local municipality or homeowner's association to ensure your chosen shed follows these guidelines.
