Subway tile refers to the classic glazed white rectangular ceramic tiles that are laid horizontally with a 50% offset from one another. Today, the rectangular tiles are used as kitchen backsplashes, bathroom and shower walls, and in many other capacities. Subway tile comes in an extensive array of designs, sizes, and materials (like glass, porcelain, marble, natural stone), which are then laid in the same or similar staggered patterns.

Where Did Subway Tile Originate?

Subway tile was first created in the early 1900s when architects were asked to design a wall surface to be used in the first subway in New York City. Since this was the beginning of underground transit which was unfamiliar to many, it was their aim to create a bright and clean look that felt safe as people started to explore this system of transport. Additionally, the curved edges and glossy finish made it a sanitary, low-maintenance, and aesthetic choice that was easy to clean.

From these stations, subway tiles began to appear in many domestic and commercial applications. Today it is considered one of the more essential elements in interior design thanks to the ease with which you can pair it with other styles – whether modern, traditional, farmhouse, or industrial. Subway tiles provide a timeless design that has been used for over 100 years and here are few more reasons why:

  • It is good for areas that are prone to staining and water (like the kitchen and bathroom) since it is so sanitary and easy to clean.
  • It creates an impactful design with an easy and simple layout.
  • That being said, thanks to modern technology, there are a variety of finishes and styles, meaning you can create an impressive array of patterns (herringbone, stacked lines), and layouts.
  • It's possible to create a dramatic difference in appearance with small alterations like the stack position of the tiles, grout color (light or dark), or addition of tiles in contrasting colors.
  • Subway tile can be used in fireplace surrounds, for shower and tub walls, as backsplashes, for feature walls, or in an all-white bathroom – the possibilities are endless.
  • Subway tiles can cost as little as $1 per tile or $8 per square foot, making it a cost-effective choice – particularly if you stick to the traditional white style.
  • The traditional pattern is laid in 50% offset – meaning the middle of the tile is aligned with the edges of the top (or bottom) two tiles.
  • However, it's possible to achieve the subway tile pattern also laying in a 1/3 or 1/4 offset where they are staggered by 33% and 25% respectively

What Size Is Subway Tile?

The standard size of subway tile is 3" x 6", however it is still possible to create the subway pattern as long as you have a rectangle with 1:2 dimensions. Some measurements include 2" x 4", 4" x 8", and 6" x 12". For more info on their sizes, read Subway Tile Sizes: Find the Right Size for Your Home.
