How to Install a Closet Organization Unit
Learn the basics of installing a closet storage unit.
Installing a closet organization unit can be easy and relatively quick with a little planning and the right tools. How you install it will depend on the type of unit you select as well as the wall you're mounting it on. Read below for more information on how to successfully install your closet organization system.
Tools You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Hammer
- Level
- Studfinder
- Drill & drill bits (if required by instructions)
- Pencil
- Measuring tape
Start by spreading out all of the materials on a large desk or floor area, then thoroughly read any instructions that came with your organization unit. Closet organization units come with several shelf types, such as mesh shelves (linen or pantry shelving), standard shelves, and hanging rods. If your closet system is not a fixed mount set-up, make sure to plan out where you want the different parts of shelving situated in your closet. If there's a hanging rod, consider how long the garments will be that are hanging from it and how that affects where to place your shelves.
If there are custom cabinets, start assembling those first based on your instructions. Then use your pencil, level, and studfinder to mark the correct locations on your wall for attaching the mounting system. If there are no studs and you need to install into drywall, evaluate the types of screws and the amount of support you will need for the shelves. Consider anchor screws or metal toggle bolts.
Attach the mounting system to your wall using the method your instructions and wall type require. Once you have that in place, take a look at where you want to place your shelves. Some units have a track system that allows shelving to be moved around, however your unit may also come with a designated shelf location. Most shelves will lock into place on top of brackets that are attached to the wall unit. If your closet unit comes with support brackets, place them every 36 inches for maximum support at the front of the shelf.
Tip!
Add wire baskets and storage boxes to your shelves for an organized and put-together look.
