The back panel needs to be put on with the decorative panel facing inward, or the bottom piece will not fit. Other than that, all the pieces snap together, and no tools are needed! The adjustable shelf is great, so you can customize it for your storage needs. I'm using this as storage for my Hydroponics set up for growing veggies indoors. It's a great size to store seeds and extra lights in.
