Wellness at Work: Relaxation Room Ideas
Create a stress-free sanctuary.
Too much stress in the workplace is bad for you, your employees, and your business. By accommodating your employees' relaxation needs, you can promote productivity and improve the health and morale of everyone at work. One way to combat workplace tension and fatigue is to create a wellness space where your employees can go to relax. Here are some ideas to help get you started designing an office relaxation room.
1. Design a Distinct Space

Employees need a place to go for a brief respite from work stressors, so it’s important that your wellness room is separate from the main work space. Ideally, a relaxation space would provide privacy behind closed doors. However, if your office doesn’t have a separate room, you can create a distinct area using room dividers to partition the office and an area rug to define the relaxation area.

The overall ambience of a wellness room should be calming. You want to create a space that’s free of distractions and reminders of work – so no printers, computers, copy machines, or telephones. Streamlined, modern furniture and minimalistic decor will give the space an open and uncluttered feeling that encourages rest. Also consider installing dimmable lighting to give your employees a break from harsh office lighting and screens that can strain their eyes.

Comfortable seating is a must-have in any relaxation space! Choose customizable seating like modular sofas, bean bag chairs, and ottomans so your employees have various seating options to choose from. This also gives them the ability to move the furniture to different places if they want more privacy and separation from others.

Depending on the needs of your employees, you could choose to create a more fun and energizing wellness space. Include a foosball, billiards, or ping-pong table to encourage activity, or some board games for quiet but friendly competition. Recharging wouldn’t be complete without a coffee maker or snack storage to give your employees some extra fuel. Decorate the space with bold colors like cool blue, bright orange, and pops of yellow to give the room an energizing effect.

An office wellness room is the perfect place to embrace Zen decor to create a relaxing environment. Engage all of the senses with an indoor fountain for soft white noise and an oil diffuser for calming scents. Decorating with live plants will improve the air quality of the space, but artificial plants will have a similarly relaxing visual impact. For a calming effect, opt for a subtle color scheme of neutral and muted colors.

The perfect relaxation room is designed with everyone in mind, so consider the needs of all of your employees when creating it. For example, a wellness space is essential for nursing mothers who may require a quiet, private space to pump breast milk. Ensure they have access to comfortable seating, electrical outlets, and cold storage to keep their milk. If your wellness space doesn’t have lockable doors, consider adding privacy signs, curtains, or room dividers so your employees can feel at ease.
