What Are the Most Common Bed Sizes?
Find the perfect fit!
Choosing the proper bed dimensions depends on the size of the room, your height and body type, and if you sleep alone or with others. This guide highlights each bed size option so you can find the perfect one for your sleeping needs.
Twin and Twin XL
Twin (or single) beds are designed for one person, measuring 38" x 75", and are compatible with twin-size mattresses. Twin XL beds measure 38" x 80", giving you an additional 5" to stretch out your legs. There are twin XL mattresses designed specifically to accomodate the extra bed length.
- Their narrow frames make twin and twin XL beds a great choice for children, preteens, and teenagers.
- When most children outgrow their crib, they upgrade to twin beds.
- Twin beds are also great space-saving options for shared bedrooms.
- Some sets of twin beds can also be assembled to create bunk beds, providing a fun experience for your kids and even more space.
- Twin beds (especially twin XL options) are popular with adults where space is tight, like in guest rooms, dorm rooms, or small bedrooms.
Tip!
Standard daybeds are the same size as twin beds and typically use twin-size mattresses. Learn more in Your Guide to Daybed Sizes & Daybed Mattress Sizes.
Full/Double
If you're ready for a bed that fits two people or gives you more room to stretch out, consider a full/ double bed. On average, these beds are 54" x 70"–75" and pair with full mattress sizes.
- Full beds are typically the same length as a twin, but provide almost 1.5x the width.
- Two people can sleep comfortably but compactly on a full or double. However, these beds are also deemed perfect for adult solo sleepers.
- If you like to sleep with a lot of blankets, pillows, or the company of a pet, there is plenty of space on a full bed.
Tip!
If you are unsure whether a full bed or a larger size is right for you, ask yourself these questions:
- Do you like to take up a lot of space when you sleep?
- Do you have a larger bedroom?
- Do you sleep with a partner?
If you said yes to these questions, you might be ready for a queen-size bed.
Queen
Queen beds are by far the most popular bed option because of their comfortable size and spaciousness. Measuring 60" x 80" and compatible with queen-size mattresses, they fit well within primary bedrooms and are wide enough for partnered sleeping.
- Due to their popularity, you can expect to find a large variety to choose from at affordable prices.
- If you love the value of a queen, but find it a little small for your primary bedroom or a little too cramped for your growing family, consider the next size up: a king bed.
King
King beds are the second-most popular bed size because they provide plenty of sleeping room for up to two adults. Standard king beds are 76" x 80" and designed to fit king-size mattresses.
- If you sleep with a partner and find the 60" width of a queen bed too crowded, a king is the perfect solution.
- Although they're the same length as a queen bed (80"), their width of 76" is significantly larger than the queen.
- The extra space that a king provides makes them great for sleeping comfortably with a partner next to you – you will hardly feel them tossing or turning in the night.
- The size of a king bed makes it the perfect centerpiece for large primary bedrooms.
- If you and your partner have different sleeping needs, you can also opt for an adjustable split-king bed and a split-king mattress.
- Split king beds allow each person to have their own twin XL mattress that they can tailor to their sleep preferences. Check out What Is a Split King & Do I Need One? to learn more.
California King
California king beds are the largest bed size available. They pair with California king mattresses and measure 72" x 84", which is a massive amount of space for two people to comfortably sleep in.
- Sometimes, the California king bed is referred to as the "extra-long king bed".
- California king beds actually have a slightly smaller width than a regular king, but with several more inches of length.
- Their unique measurements make them a great choice for you if a king bed doesn't provide enough legroom.
- Overall, California king beds are extremely roomy and a luxurious option for any spacious bedroom.
