A tumble dryer is one of the core appliances that contributes to the smooth running of a household. Whether you do laundry once a week or several times a day, this appliance means you don't need a clothesline to hang wet laundry from. The question is, how do you know when it is time to replace your dryer? Below are the top signs you should look out for.

While it’s best to act as soon as you notice anything unusual about your dryer's running to prevent issues from worsening, sometimes you have no choice but to give yours the boot. Here are some ways to tell your dryer's time has come.

1. It Is Older Than 10 Years

Although this age doesn't mean you should immediately replace your dryer, it does mean you should monitor the performance of yours and prepare for the possibility that you might need to purchase a new one in the near future.

  • Depending on maintenance and usage, dryers have a typical shelf life of between 10 to 15 years.
  • Older dryers typically use outdated technology and are not energy efficient, often increasing electricity bills.

2. It Is Making Loud And/Or Unusual Sounds

Dryers are generally noisy appliances, but if you hear sounds outside the norm like rattling, squealing, or banging, you need to take a closer look.

  • Noises like these could be the result of bent blower wheel blades.
  • If you replace the blower wheel and the sounds persist, it is time to replace your dryer.

3. Your Clothes Aren't Being Dried Properly

If your clothes are still damp after a full drying cycle, you have to run the machine more than once to get them completely dry, or it takes longer than usual, there is clearly an issue.

  • The same applies if your clothes come out extremely hot. This could mean your dryer is overheating to dry your clothes, posing a fire risk.
  • Sometimes this can be the result of a clogged lint trap or vent, which can easily be scrubbed clean.
  • However, if this doesn't work, you may need a new machine.

4. Your Clothing Is Coming Out Damaged

If you have noticed your clothing is coming out ripped or damaged, it is likely you need to replace your dryer. You can try to troubleshoot your machine – but if this makes no difference, you should definitely get rid of the culprit.

5. You Notice Loose Wiring

Any exposed wiring requires immediate attention. While you can call a technician to rewire the entire dryer, it will likely be more worthwhile to buy a new one.

  • Any smoky smells can also mean faulty wiring.
  • Failure to address this problem can result in a fire hazard.

6. Repairs Are Too Costly

  • There are certain dryer issues that can be repaired, but if the cost is too steep, you will need to take a moment to reconsider. Using the “50 rule,” determine if the cost of repairing the appliance is 50% or more of the original cost. If so, then it is not worth it and you should replace your dryer instead.
  • Replacing parts on older machines can be more costly (sometimes those parts are no longer manufactured).
  • Investing in a new machine may cost you more up front, but you will be saving in the long run both on energy bills and future potential repairs.

Tip!

Wayfair offers protection plans which extend coverage beyond a manufacturer's limited warranty. This can include:

  • Full parts and labor coverage for breakdowns and failures
  • No deductibles or hidden fees
  • Free in-home repairs
  • A full reimbursement or replacement if it cannot be fixed

Selecting a protection plan when purchasing your dryer can give you peace of mind while investing in a new appliance. Opt for three- or five-year coverage based on your preference when you add a dryer to your cart.

If you’re not ready to part with your dryer, there are a few actions you can take to help keep your appliance running for longer.

  • Clean the lint trap between every load. An excess amount of lint makes your dryer work harder to dry your clothes, so cleaning it out regularly extends your dryer’s lifespan and reduces the risk of lint trap–related fires.

  • Deep clean the screen every three or so months. Though you should remove lint from the screen every time you use the dryer, deep cleaning can remove built-up residue left from detergent.

  • Make sure the vent is clean. Similar to the lint trap, dryer vents can build up lint and other debris, preventing your dryer from working efficiently. You can find cleaning kits to do it yourself, or you can hire a professional.

  • Service your dryer annually. Professionals can help spot any issues before they cause more damage.

  • Check and clean the vent hose. Dryer vent hoses can also accumulate lint, preventing your dryer from fully drying clothes.

  • Ensure the door seals properly. A broken seal can increase drying time and reduce efficiency by letting air escape.
